The Student Teaching Experience

Readiness for Student Teaching

Both the MAT program and the State of Maine have requirements for entering student teaching. In order to be placed, candidates must:

  • Maintain an overall GPA of 3.0, with no grade lower than a B- in any course
  • Maintain satisfactory attendance in all coursework and field work
  • Demonstrate at least 85% of identified dispositions for teaching
  • Demonstrate via e-Portfolio at least beginning evidence of all State teacher preparation standards
  • Consistently follow the Professional Code of Conduct throughout field experiences in the fall term

Student Teaching Placement
Student teaching placements are made within a reasonable distance of MECA&D. Candidates are responsible for the cost of transportation while student teaching. Placements beyond a reasonable distance from the college, or outside of the State of Maine, will be considered on a case-by-case basis upon careful review of candidate performance, and a demonstration of effectiveness of the potential mentor teacher.

The Director of Art Ed Outreach, or a faculty designee, interviews educators who are interested in serving as mentor teachers. Those selected represent highly skilled art teachers who are certified and have at least three years of experience in their current school at the grade level(s) being supervised.
