Responsibilities of the Faculty Supervisor

The faculty supervisor is the link between your school placement and the MAT Program at MECA&D. S/he is responsible for helping you to make the transition from the study of educational theory to practical application. As an outside liaison, the faculty supervisor serves as a guide and sounding board for your student teaching experience. The faculty supervisor shares responsibility for helping you to gain the expertise you need to pursue a successful career in teaching. S/he also promotes a collaborative relationship between the college and the school.

Some of the responsibilities assigned to the faculty supervisor:

  • Meet with the candidate and mentor teacher to discuss mutual expectations for the student teaching experience.
  • Collaborate with the mentor teacher in designing appropriate and meaningful experiences for the candidate.
  • Develop and maintain a professional relationship with the school administration, mentor teacher, and the candidate.
  • Schedule at least two observations with the candidate per placement.
  • Assess the candidate’s performance and provide feedback.
  • Meet with the mentor teacher and the teacher candidate to resolve problems whenever they arise.
  • Complete the required evaluations of the candidate’s performance, using concrete observations to make decisions.

Formative Assessment and Summative Evaluation
Formal assessment occurs twice during each student teaching placement, at mid-term and at the end of your placement. Maintaining observational logs and personal reflections along the way will help you when it comes time for formal observations and a final evaluation of your student teaching tenure. Standards-based assessment tools have been developed to help you keep track of your learning and to aid your cooperative teacher and faculty supervisor in making evidence-based decisions about your performance. You have already demonstrated effectiveness in many of the Maine standards through coursework during the summer and fall terms. These tools represent those areas that have already been addressed in the previous terms and will be extended during student teaching. They will be used to assess your student teaching performance through direct observation, a personal interview, and a review of your work samples.  Use the formative assessment checklists to monitor your progress and the summative assessment tools to evaluate your teaching at the end of each placement.
