Distance Placements

Those teacher candidates who have demonstrated exceptional teaching skills and the ability to work independently may select distance placements as long as the mentor teacher is certified and has three years of teaching experience, the school values and philosophy align with the MAT Program, and the school’s technology and privacy policies support video conferencing and distance supervision.

Performance Expectations
Student teaching is a full time job that requires professionalism. It gives you the chance to integrate all of the learning that has occurred thus far, to learn from an experienced art teacher, and to benefit from professional feedback. While you are doing your student teaching, you will also be enrolled in the Professional Practices Seminar. This course emphasizes using collaborative inquiry to improve your teaching and locating research-based solutions to the questions you raise about practice during your student teaching placements.

Attendance
Attendance at school and partner school site is mandatory unless an illness or a family emergency arises. Please contact your mentor teacher, faculty supervisor, and the Director of Art Ed Outreach in the event of an absence.

Evaluations
Mentor teachers and supervising faculty complete mid-term and final evaluations. Each makes a minimum of two formal evaluations. The formal evaluations are in writing and are shared with the student teacher.

Dress Code
All candidates must dress professionally and adhere to the policies of the school within which they are placed.

Confidentiality
You are expected to keep any information you learn about students confidential and to follow the principles for confidentiality established by your respective schools. In addition, please do not discuss issues concerning individual student performance with your mentor teachers while in the presence of students or their peers.

Withdrawal
Student teaching demands adherence to strict policies, both of MECA&D and the partner school. Candidates can jeopardize their placements through lack of professional integrity, teaching deficiency, the ability to work professionally, or excessive absences. Removal from student teaching will be made at the request of the partner school, mentor teacher, or a MECA&D faculty supervisor. Once a decision has been made to terminate, a candidate will receive a written letter of withdrawal.

Substitute Teaching
Substitute teaching is allowed if permitted by the partner school and if all required paperwork has been completed. Candidates may receive compensation by the District in accordance with district policies. Substituting may occur only in the candidate’s assigned art classroom.

Fingerprinting
Candidates are required to participate in the State of Maine Fingerprinting Program prior to fieldwork and student teaching.
